Sean “Diddy” Combs has sued Courtney Burgess, attorney Ariel Mitchell, and NewsNation for filing false claims that he possessed videos of sexual assaults, costing him $50 million in reputational and economic harm.
In the lawsuit, filed in New York federal court, Combs alleges that Burgess falsely claimed to have evidence of his alleged assaults while knowing it was fabricated. Mitchell, who represents several of Combs’ accusers, is also accused of misleading media outlets and spreading false claims for financial gain.
NewsNation further allegedly amplified Burgess’ lies without verifying their authenticity or consulting Combs’ representatives. Combs’ attorneys argue that Burgess is a disreputable character with questionable credibility due to his lack of professional achievements and connection to the music industry.
Mitchell’s alleged misdeeds include facilitating false claims in previous cases (e.g., against Trey Songz and Chris Brown) and seeking payments for interviews about the alleged videos, including luxury travel and accommodations.
The defendants did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Combs is currently incarcerated at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn and faces charges related to a criminal empire involving drug trafficking and sexual exploitation.
This case highlights his fight for a fair trial amid widespread defamation and damage to his reputation.
