US prosecutors have accused rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs of using his wealth and influence to evade accountability for violently abusing women. In closing arguments, they told a jury that Combs oversaw a vast criminal conspiracy and used power, violence, and fear to get what he wanted. The trial has heard harrowing testimony from women who described an atmosphere of cruelty, exploitation, and intimidation.
Combs was accused of forcing singer Cassie Ventura to have sex with escorts for his entertainment, using footage as leverage. Prosecutors also said Combs pushed people to participate in drug-fuelled sex parties known as “freak offs” and used a “small army” of employees to cover up abuses and intimidate those who tried to speak out.
Combs’ lawyers have argued that he has a violent temperament but claim prosecutors misrepresent his lifestyle as evidence of crimes. The jury will begin deliberations on Friday or Monday, with Combs facing a minimum 15 years in prison if convicted on all counts.
