A new study suggests dinosaurs may not have been in decline before the Chicxulub asteroid struck 66 million years ago. Researchers analyzed fossil records of four groups of dinosaurs and found that a decrease in discoveries was likely due to geological changes rather than an actual population decline. The team examined over 8,000 fossils from the past 18 million years leading up to the asteroid impact. They estimated that these dinosaur groups likely occupied around half of North America’s landmass at different times, contradicting previous assumptions about their extinction. The study suggests dinosaurs might still be alive on Earth if not for the massive asteroid.
