Disney Ditches Racial Stereotype Warnings on Classic Films

Disney is simplifying its content warnings for classic films, including “Dumbo” and “Peter Pan”, as part of a broader shift in its diversity and inclusion efforts. The company had introduced the disclaimers in 2020 to address criticisms of racial stereotypes in some of its titles.

The new system removes these automatic warnings on older Disney+ titles, replacing them with shorter advisories that appear only when users access individual films. In “Peter Pan”, Native Americans are referred to by a racist slur, while “Dumbo” features caricatured Black stereotypes.

Disney’s shift comes as the company adjusts to increased social polarization and attempts to restore its brand image under new CEO Bob Iger, who returned in 2022. This move is part of a broader effort to adapt to changing cultural norms and audience expectations.
