Disney has removed a transgender storyline from its new animated series “Win or Lose” ahead of its release. The show’s focus on a co-ed middle school softball team, the Pickles, will now exclude a character initially set to explore gender identity.
Although the storyline was cut, the character will remain in the series, according to a person familiar with the matter. The decision was made a couple of months ago, and the character’s dialogue has already been recorded.
Disney cited parents’ desire for control over discussions about sensitive topics as the reason for removing the plot point. The company aims to allow families to address these issues on their own terms and timeline.
This move comes after the reelection of former President Donald Trump, who has criticized diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. In response to online pressure and threats, several companies have revised their DEI policies.
Disney’s stance on this matter remains unclear, with the company declining to comment on whether it is distancing itself from diversity efforts in anticipation of a potential second Trump administration.
In the past, Disney has faced controversy over its portrayal of diverse characters and storylines. The 2022 film “Lightyear” featured a same-sex relationship and kiss, but was initially met with cuts from executives before being restored.
Disney’s latest decision follows its previous efforts to include LGBTQ representation in adult-oriented features, such as FX’s “Pose” and Marvel’s “Agatha All Along”. However, this move may be seen as a departure from the company’s previous commitment to diversity.
