A former Disney employee, Michael Scheuer, has been sentenced to three years in prison for hacking into the company’s internal system after being fired. The 41-year-old father of three had made several changes to restaurant menus, including adding profanity and removing allergen warnings for ingredients that can be deadly.
Scheuer was terminated from his role as “menu production manager” in June last year, claiming it was an unfair dismissal. He allegedly began making changes to the system soon after, including modifying menu items, pricing, and employee access. The changes also included deleting allergen warnings and replacing them with misleading information.
In a plea deal, Scheuer admitted to two counts of fraud: one for using computers and one for identity documents. He was sentenced to 12 months in prison for the first count and 24 months for the second, which will run consecutively. The judge also ordered him to pay $687,786 in restitution to Disney.
Scheuer’s lawyer said his client remains remorseful and apologetic to the victims, and is grateful that the judge took into account his arguments when handing down a sentence.
