Disney’s $269 million live-action adaptation of Snow White has been hit with trigger warnings by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) for “ominous trees”, kissing, and other content. The film, starring Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, has been criticized for its perceived “woke” retelling of the classic fairy tale.
The BBFC’s warnings include triggering messages about a woman being poisoned, a couple kissing, and brief sword fights in the film. The movie also features a scene where a character threatens to shove something up another’s backside during a comic exchange.
Critics have taken issue with the film’s approach to the seven dwarfs, particularly after Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage expressed surprise that Disney would remake a story about dwarfs living in a cave together.
The film has been embroiled in controversy over its casting, plot changes, and lead actress’s comments on social media. Zegler faced backlash for criticizing Donald Trump’s re-election and making comments about the original animation’s plot.
The BBFC’s decision to issue trigger warnings highlights concerns about the content of modern adaptations of classic stories. As the film prepares to hit UK cinemas, parents are advised to be aware of these triggers when deciding whether to allow their children to watch it.
