A widely used allergy medication is under scrutiny due to its potential risks and outdated benefits. Experts are calling for the removal of diphenhydramine from over-the-counter and prescription markets in the US, citing its dangers, especially for children and older adults.
Diphenhydramine, known by the brand name Benadryl, has been a staple in American homes since 1946. However, it poses disproportionate risks compared to newer antihistamines like loratadine (Claritin), cetirizine (Zyrtec), and fexofenadine (Allegra).
The medication can cause sedation, cognitive impairment, and cardiac effects, particularly in older adults who may experience lingering sleepiness and disorientation. Children are also at risk of accidental overdose, paradoxical reactions, and even death due to accidental ingestions.
Allergy experts recommend using safer alternatives for treating symptoms like sneezing, itching, and runny nose. Loratadine and cetirizine, in particular, offer 24-hour coverage with fewer adverse events.
Despite the risks, diphenhydramine remains widely prescribed in the US, with over 1.5 million prescriptions written annually. Experts urge patients to use caution when taking combination cough and cold products containing diphenhydramine and to consult their pharmacist for guidance on safer alternatives.
As the review authors note, it’s time to say a final goodbye to diphenhydramine due to its outdated benefits and risks that can be matched or exceeded by newer antihistamines.
