Diwali Cracker Guns Blind Hundreds of Indian Children

Indian children have been injured by homemade firecrackers called “carbide guns” that exploded near their faces during the Diwali festival. At least 100 cases of severe eye injuries have been reported in Madhya Pradesh alone, with many more expected as the actual numbers are likely to be higher.

The devices, made from a mixture of calcium carbide and plastic, produce a loud blast and fiery sparks when ignited. However, the explosion is unpredictable and often delayed, causing serious damage to the eyes. Many children bought the guns after watching videos on social media platforms like Instagram Reels and YouTube.

Experts warn that the use of these devices should be banned urgently due to their potential for permanent blindness and disfigurement. “It’s a national problem,” says Dr Partha Biswas, president of the All India Ophthalmological Society. The government has already issued warnings about the dangers of calcium carbide, but it seems more needs to be done to control its sale and distribution.

As the recovery of injured children continues, families are left worrying about their loved ones’ futures. “I’m scared for his future,” says Afreen, Alzain’s worried mother, whose seven-year-old son lost his vision in an accident involving a carbide gun.
