Tennis world No 1 Novak Djokovic has criticized the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) for its handling of Jannik Sinner’s doping case, claiming that many players believe the Italian was shown “favouritism” with a three-month ban.
Sinner reached a settlement with Wada over two positive drug tests in March last year, citing contamination from his physio as the reason. However, Wada stated that the athlete bears responsibility for the entourage’s negligence. Djokovic has spoken to numerous players who share his concerns, stating that they feel it is unfair and believe top players can influence outcomes due to access to high-profile lawyers.
The contrast between Sinner’s case and those of other players, such as Simona Halep and Tara Moore, has highlighted inconsistencies in the system. Halep received a four-year ban in 2022, which was later reduced, while Moore faced an 18-month investigation before being given a shorter suspension due to contaminated meat.
Djokovic believes it is time for governing bodies to address the anti-doping system, citing its lack of effectiveness and fairness. He hopes that future cases will lead to improvements in player treatment and shorter timelines for resolution.
