Doctor Who Dives into Animation with ‘Lux’

Doctor Who is taking a leap of faith into animation this Saturday’s episode, “Lux,” which marks a dream come true for its creators. Russell T Davies, the showrunner, and stars Ncuti Gatwa and Varada Sethu shared their excitement about filming animated sequences.

For Gatwa, it was a fun experience to work on animations differently. He praised the team’s creative process, saying they had to adapt to animators’ preferences. Alan Cumming plays an animated antagonist who traps the Doctor and Belinda inside a cartoon world. The animation was a labor of love for Davies, who has always wanted to try it but never had the budget before.

Davies drew from his graphic design background, where he worked on children’s series like “Why Don’t You?” He enjoyed learning about the history of cartoons and discovering nuances like the context of white gloves. The team collaborated closely with animators to ensure a professional outcome. Davies described the experience as “a proper playground” for animation enthusiasts.

With Disney Plus supporting the project, Davies hopes to explore more animation in future episodes. His passion for animation is evident, and he’s thrilled to have had the opportunity to dive into this new world of storytelling.
