BBC sci-fi show Doctor Who, starring Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor, is being criticized for its perceived “wokeness.” However, the show’s boss, Russell T Davies, has hit back at these claims. According to Davies, he doesn’t have time for complaints from online warriors and prefers to focus on representing diverse perspectives.
Davies stated that when writers like him aim to include messages and issues in their work, it’s simply a matter of openness and inclusivity. He believes that limiting oneself to a narrow perspective is restrictive and counterproductive.
The show’s new companion, Varada Sethu, has also addressed the criticism, saying she believes the show is on the right track by representing diverse voices. She notes that “woke” just means being inclusive and caring about people.
Gatwa added that the show’s shift towards representation is a step forward for media, allowing it to reflect the societies we live in. However, he also hopes that one day having non-white leads won’t be seen as groundbreaking.
Doctor Who has undergone many changes since its 1963 debut, including the introduction of female and black lead characters. The show’s future remains uncertain, with unconfirmed reports suggesting Gatwa may leave and the show facing cancellation.
