Researchers from the University of South Australia studied 11 studies on cold-water immersion and its effects on health and well-being among healthy adults. While some benefits were found, such as reduced stress levels and improved mood, these effects are short-lived, typically lasting around 12 hours.
Cold showers also showed promise, with one study reporting a 29% reduction in sickness absence. However, further research is needed to confirm the long-term benefits and risks of cold-water immersion, particularly for those with pre-existing health conditions.
The study found that while cold-water immersion may seem beneficial at first, it can actually cause an immediate spike in inflammatory markers. It’s essential to consider individual health needs before participating in this practice.
