‘Dog Man’ Takes Box Office with $36 Million Debut

DreamWorks Animation’s “Dog Man” has taken the top spot at the box office, earning $36 million in ticket sales over the weekend. The animated film, based on the popular graphic novel series by Dav Pilkey, marks a big debut for 2025, outperforming previous January launches like 2016’s “Kung Fu Panda 3.”

Produced for just $40 million, “Dog Man” is expected to be profitable with its modest budget. The film received an “A” CinemaScore from audiences and was voiced by a star-studded cast, including Pete Davidson, Lil Rel Howery, and Isla Fisher.

The success of family-friendly films continues to boost the box office, with PG-rated movies accounting for 33% of all ticket revenue in 2024. The current top film, Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King,” held its third-place spot with $6.1 million, bringing its global total to $653 million.

Other notable releases include Warner Bros.’ horror-comedy “Companion” and Sony Pictures’ R-rated comedy “One of Them Days.” “Companion” earned $9.5 million in 3,285 locations, while “One of Them Days” took in $6 million over the weekend.

The film industry’s performance so far this year suggests that family movies are driving the box office success, with PG animation films dominating revenue. According to senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian, the “PG animation family film wave continues” in 2025.
