Dollar General to Close 141 Stores Amid Retail Decline

Retail store closures continue to plague the industry in 2025, with high-profile chains like Joann fabrics and Walgreens already shuttering locations across the US. Now, Dollar General is joining them, announcing plans to close 141 stores.

The company behind Dollar General discount stores and PopShelf retail chain made the announcement as part of its fourth-quarter and fiscal-year 2024 earnings report. The decision was based on a review of individual store performances, operating conditions, and expected future performance.

Dollar General will close 96 of its own stores and 45 PopShelf locations. This represents around 20% of PopShelf’s store count, which currently exceeds 220 stores across 20 states. Dollar General itself has more than 20,000 stores across 48 states, with the closures representing less than one percent of its overall store base.

CEO Todd Vasos stated that the decision will better position the company to serve customers and communities. However, he did not address what would happen to the employees at closing locations. Dollar General employs over 194,000 staff members nationwide.

The closures are part of a broader trend of retail store closures in 2025, with thousands of locations expected to close across the US. Consumers are increasingly turning to online shopping due to inflationary pressures and decreasing foot traffic.
