Dollar General Warns of Weak Sales Amid High Inflation

Dollar General has joined a growing list of retailers warning of weak annual sales and profit, citing high inflation and economic uncertainty as major factors. The company’s CEO, Todd Vasos, stated that customers are struggling to afford essentials due to reduced spending power.

The cautious retail outlook for the year is attributed to U.S President Donald Trump’s trade policies and federal government spending cuts. Vasos noted a decline in buying trends among lower-income groups earning less than $50,000 annually, with many reporting they can only afford basic necessities.

Dollar General’s fiscal 2025 profit forecast is below estimates, but its holiday-quarter results beat expectations due to store remodeling and inventory trimming initiatives. The company’s shares rose 4% following the announcement.
