Dolly Parton Honors Late Husband Carl Dean, Inspiration for Her Hit Song ‘Jolene’

Dolly Parton has shared that her late husband Carl Dean was the inspiration behind one of her biggest hits, “Jolene.” However, the song’s origins date back to a different real-life experience. In 1973, Parton wrote the song after meeting an 8-year-old girl with striking features on stage.

The girl had red hair, beautiful skin, and green eyes, and was looking up at Parton for an autograph. Parton said she told the girl, “You’re just the prettiest little thing I’ve ever seen.” The conversation led to the song’s title, Jolene, which Parton thought sounded like a song.

“Jolene” became one of Parton’s first hit singles and has since been covered by numerous artists, including her goddaughter Miley Cyrus and BeyoncĂ©. Parton attributes its enduring popularity to its catchy chord progression and simple melody.

Parton also shared that the song was “an innocent” tune, despite its themes of desire and beauty. She recalled a joke about Dean spending time at the bank because the teller paid him so much attention, which adds to the lighthearted nature of the song.

On Monday, Parton announced that her 82-year-old husband Carl Dean had passed away in Nashville. The couple spent over 60 years together and will be laid to rest in a private ceremony with immediate family in attendance.
