Dolphins Pursue Steelers’ Tight End Jonnu Smith

The Miami Dolphins have initiated trade talks with the Pittsburgh Steelers over tight end Jonnu Smith. Sources close to ESPN confirm that Smith has expressed interest in reworking his current two-year deal, which would pay him $4.8 million in 2025.

Smith’s value stems from his past connection with Steelers head coach Arthur Smith, who coached him at Tennessee and traded for him during his stint as the Falcons’ head coach. The tight end set a franchise record last season, earning a Pro Bowl selection, while leading all Dolphins players in receptions.

However, trading Smith would leave the Dolphins without four prominent veteran leaders, including Calais Campbell, Terron Armstead, and Jalen Ramsey. While Julian Hill has taken on the primary blocking role for the team, the loss of Smith could be significant.

The Steelers do not have a pressing need at tight end, having signed Pat Freiermuth to a lucrative extension last offseason. However, they may benefit from acquiring Smith’s production, which has been impressive under Arthur Smith’s tutelage, including an eight-touchdown season in 2020.
