Donald Trump Names Richard Grenell to Lead Special Missions Diplomacy

President-elect Donald Trump announced Saturday that he has picked long-time foreign policy adviser Richard Grenell to serve as an envoy for special missions, tasked with helping the incoming administration navigate some of the toughest international challenges.

Grenell, who served as ambassador to Germany during Trump’s first term and was a contender for secretary of state before being passed over for Marco Rubio, will lead diplomatic efforts in hotspots like Venezuela and North Korea. Grenell’s unorthodox approach to diplomacy has sometimes been at odds with allies and the foreign policy establishment.

Despite this, Trump sees value in Grenell’s blunt style and his ability to push for a peace deal that would preserve Ukraine’s territory while allowing Russia to maintain control over certain regions. Grenell was also an early supporter of Trump’s 2024 campaign and echoed Trump’s “America first” mantra on the global stage.

Grenell’s appointment is part of a broader effort by Trump to reassert his authority on foreign policy issues, which have been a point of contention with some allies. Trump has expressed concerns about NATO membership and defense spending targets, and Grenell’s views on these matters are likely to align with those of the president-elect.

In addition to Grenell, Trump also announced that he is appointing Devin Nunes, CEO of his Truth Social platform, to head a presidential advisory board overseeing the US intelligence community.
