Donald Trump Pays Tribute to Jimmy Carter After His Passing

President-elect Donald Trump surprised many by sharing a heartfelt tribute to former President Jimmy Carter after his passing at the age of 100, just two months after mocking him on the campaign trail.

In a series of posts on Truth Social, Trump expressed his condolences to the Carter family and acknowledged Carter’s dedication to improving the lives of all Americans. Despite their past disagreements, Trump praised Carter as a “truly good man” who “worked hard to make America a better place.” He also offered warmest condolences to Carter’s loved ones.

Carter’s son, Chip, confirmed his father’s death in Plains, Georgia, after entering hospice care in February 2023. President Joe Biden also paid tribute to Carter, calling him a “man of great character and courage, hope and optimism” and sharing an old photograph of the two.

Trump’s shift in tone is a stark contrast to their past exchanges, which included Trump mocking Carter as “the happiest man because Jimmy Carter is considered a brilliant president.” The former president-elect had also criticized Carter’s claims about Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Despite this, it appears that Trump and Carter shared a civil moment earlier in 2019 when they discussed US relations with China. Melania Trump also attended a tribute service for Carter’s wife, Rosalynn, in Georgia after her passing in 2023.

Carter had been open about his support for Trump’s opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, throughout the campaign. The US Department of Veterans Affairs will now fly American flags at half-staff during Trump’s inauguration day later this month as a mark of respect for Carter’s passing.
