Nintendo has finally responded to the criticism that its Switch console lineup lacks variety with the upcoming release of Donkey Kong Bananza. The action-adventure game stars the beloved gorilla Donkey Kong and marks a welcome shift from Mario Kart World, which dominated the console’s initial launch lineup.
Developed by the team behind Super Mario Odyssey, Bananza boasts colorful, expansive environments and a world full of smashing opportunities. Players can destroy everything in their path to find treasure or unlock new areas to explore. The game also features co-op mode and a unique leveling system that allows Donkey Kong to transform into other animals using his sidekick Pauline’s singing powers.
While the Switch 2’s initial launch lineup has been light on Nintendo first-party games, Bananza should help alleviate this issue in the summer months when supply meets demand. However, industry analyst Mat Piscatella notes that a strong holiday season lineup is crucial to maintaining momentum and proving the console’s value.
Bananza feels like the perfect game for the Switch 2, offering an action-adventure experience reminiscent of classic titles without being too Mario-centric. With its release on July 17, Donkey Kong Bananza is set to bring much-needed variety to Nintendo’s console lineup and give gamers a reason to celebrate the Switch 2 beyond just playing third-party games.
