Don’t Wait for Cervical Cancer – Book Your Screening Today

Cervical cancer is a leading cause of death among women in the UK. In Liverpool, nearly one-third of those eligible haven’t attended their cervical screening appointments, highlighting the importance of prioritizing this lifesaving test.

Cervical Cancer Prevention Week (21-28 January) is a crucial time to emphasize the benefits of early detection and prevention. The NHS data shows that cervical screening can prevent up to 70% of cervical cancer deaths.

The health officials are urging those aged 25-64 to book their appointment today, reminding them that if they missed their last GP appointment, there’s no need to wait for another letter. GPs reassure individuals that screenings are handled with care and sensitivity, encouraging them to bring a family member or friend if preferred.

To make screening more accessible, the NHS is launching a mobile cervical screening service from January to March. These drop-in sessions don’t require an appointment, and people can find updates on the Liverpool City Council and NHS Cheshire and Merseyside social media pages.

Councillor Harry Doyle, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Culture, stated that “new approaches, vaccines, and effective screening programmes offer a possibility of a future without cervical cancer.” Prof Matt Ashton, Director of Public Health, added that the combination of HPV vaccination and cervical screening programme has made cervical cancer almost completely preventable.

Dr Jill Kirkman, Cancer Lead GP at NHS Liverpool Place, reassures individuals that “cervical screening can seem daunting, but it is important to remember that we will do our best to make the appointment feel comfortable and pain-free.” She encourages those who have received an invitation or missed their last screening to contact their GP practice to book an appointment.
