The “Are you human?” question has been a standard in the world of CAPTCHAs for years, but Vercel CEO Guillermo Rauch’s latest innovation brings a more fun approach. The “DOOM” CAPTCHA presents a playable version of the classic game within your browser, requiring players to defeat three enemies in Nightmare mode to prove they’re human.
To pass the test, users must navigate around the screen to get kills while having 0% armor and 100% health. The game is available as a WebAssembly app and offers a run-on joke answer to the common question of whether something can run DOOM.
In contrast to traditional CAPTCHAs that feature images or squiggly lines, the “DOOM” CAPTCHA provides a more engaging experience. Users can choose between two options: either complete a series of monotonous tasks like identifying fire hydrants or squiggly letters, or play DOOM to break up the monotony.
While traditional CAPTCHAs serve a purpose in verifying user identity and training AI, the “DOOM” CAPTCHA is purely for entertainment. However, it’s clear that some users would prefer the more enjoyable experience offered by this innovative approach.
