“Dope Thief” Explores Vulnerable Side of Crime Drama

Apple TV+ original series “Dope Thief” tells its story with a degree of empathy and vulnerability rarely seen in crime dramas, thanks to the efforts of star Brian Tyree Henry and Wagner Moura. The show follows two friends who meet while incarcerated and pose as DEA agents to rob low-level drug dealers.

Henry and Moura bring a sense of realism to their characters, with little bravado and no clichés. Instead, they respond to their plight like real people would, panicking and making bad choices. Their intimacy on screen is rooted in the connection between two men who have been through extreme situations together.

According to Henry, the key to this intimacy was found during filming, when he and Moura would touch or lay their heads on each other without question. This was reminiscent of real friendships, which they explored in the characters’ backstories, including moments from their teenage years while incarcerated.

Henry praised series creator Peter Craig for giving him and Moura “room” to explore these moments, allowing them to remove the shame associated with their characters’ experiences and reveal a deeper vulnerability.

“Dope Thief” stars Henry and Moura as they navigate their situation with tension and emotion. The show is not just about high-octane action but also a story of human connection and survival. New episodes premiere on Apple TV+ Fridays.
