Doug Ghim fired a 3-under 68 in Friday’s round at the John Deere Classic, moving him into a one-shot lead and his first 36-hole lead on the PGA Tour in six years. The eagle from 179 yards away on the par-4 15th marked the second straight day he has holed out from the fairway.
Ghim is still far from winning his first tournament at John Deere, which has produced more first-time winners than any other PGA Tour event since 1970. “I’m not there yet,” he said. “The person that’s going to win this tournament will be in the 20-under-par area.”
Max Homa and defending champion Davis Thompson are within one shot of Ghim’s lead. Homa, who was tied with Ghim late in the afternoon, missed a 12-foot par putt on his final hole to fall back to second place.
The cut at John Deere has been set at 5-under 137, with Rickie Fowler and Jake Knapp making it by the number. The weekend is expected to be wet, with starting times moved up due to rain in the forecast.
