Apple’s latest software updates, including the iOS 26 beta and iPadOS 26 beta, can be plagued with bugs and issues. If you’re experiencing usability or stability problems, downgrading to a previous version of iOS might be the solution.
Before attempting to downgrade, ensure you’ve made an archived backup of your device using iTunes or Finder on a Mac. This will allow you to restore your device to its previous state if needed. However, keep in mind that restoring without a backup may not completely erase all data and settings.
To begin the process, launch Finder on your Mac (or iTunes on Windows PCs) and connect your iPhone or iPad using a Lightning or USB-C cable. Put your device into recovery mode by following these steps:
For Face ID-enabled iPads: Press Volume Up, quickly release, then press Volume Down and hold the Top button until it restarts.
For iPhone XS or later: Press Volume Up, quickly release, then press Volume Down and hold the Side button until you see the recovery mode screen.
Once in recovery mode, a dialog will appear asking if you want to restore your device. Click Restore to wipe your device and install the latest public release of iOS or iPadOS.
Note that downgrading an Apple Watch requires sending it to Apple for repair.
If you’ve installed watchOS 26 on your Apple Watch, be aware that downgrading to a previous version of watchOS may not be possible manually, as it can only be done by contacting Apple support.
