This revelation started when Gates was just nine years old, as he buried his father’s father, Edward St. Lawrence Gates, at an integrated Episcopal cemetery in Cumberland, Maryland. His great-great-grandmother had kept a secret about her husband’s identity for 150 years, which was only revealed after Gates visited the family home that she purchased with $1,400 cash in 1870.
Reflecting on his work, Gates is proud of helping people find their Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry from Eastern Europe. He has also been instrumental in digitizing records to aid genealogical research.
