The refinery, located over 1,000 km from the war zone, was previously targeted by drones in April 2024, which caused minor damage but no disruption to operations. However, recent drone attacks suggest a coordinated effort by Ukrainian intelligence agencies.
Ukrainian officials have denied using foreign-made weapons in these strikes, while Russian authorities claim that workers are being evacuated due to the threat of further drone attacks.
