Netflix co-founders Matt and Ross Duffer are leaving the streaming giant to join Paramount Pictures in a four-year exclusive deal. The brothers, known for creating the hit show “Stranger Things,” will develop movies, television, and streaming projects through their production company Upside Down Pictures.
The new agreement emphasizes large-scale theatrical films, marking a shift from Netflix’s more intimate storytelling style. Following their current deal with Netflix, which concludes in April 2026, the Duffers will focus on creating ambitious projects at Paramount.
Reunited with Cindy Holland and Matt Thunell, the brothers expressed excitement about joining the Paramount family, citing Hollywood legacy and creative freedom as key factors. The move reunites them with friends who initially supported their script for “Stranger Things” in 2015.
Paramount Pictures’ chairman and CEO David Ellison stated that the company aims to champion filmmakers’ work and amplify it globally. Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein welcomed the Duffers, praising their creative vision and storytelling ability.
As they gear up for the final season of “Stranger Things,” the Duffers will remain involved in Netflix’s shows while exploring new projects at Paramount. They expressed gratitude for their time at Netflix, citing Ted Sarandos, Bela Bajaria, and Peter Friedlander as key supporters.
