“Dune” Prequel Series Expands Universe with New Worlds and Characters

Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max is set to premiere the highly anticipated six-part prequel series “Dune: Prophecy,” which expands on the already vast “Dune” universe. The show, executive produced by Alison Schapker, explores new environments and time periods, while maintaining a cohesive connection to both the original source material and Denis Villeneuve’s movies.

Set 10,000 years before the events of Villeneuve’s films, the series delves into the origin story of the Bene Gesserit, a powerful group of women trained in harnessing special abilities. The show follows sisters Valya and Tula Harkonnen as they establish the fabled sect that will become known as the Bene Gesserit.

“Prophecy” features new worlds such as Salusa Secundus, an imperial planet in the series, and Wallach IX, where the sisterhood is based. The icy and forbidding planet of Lankiveil also makes its appearance, where the Harkonnens were banished during this period in the story’s history.

While there was a focus on making these worlds feel “real and gritty and epic” visually, it was equally important to ground the sprawling story through character development. According to Schapker, the show aims to introduce newcomers to the franchise while still catering to adult audiences with more mature themes.

The series premieres Sunday on Max, offering viewers a new entry point into the expansive “Dune” universe. With its unique blend of science fiction and complex characters, “Dune: Prophecy” is set to captivate fans and newcomers alike.
