Duolingo, a popular language learning app, is now introducing a chess course designed to make the game more accessible to beginners. The new course aims to attract those who have felt intimidated by chess’s complexity and provide a engaging way to learn.
The course offers bite-sized lessons, gamified exercises, and interactive mini matches against Duolingo’s AI-powered bot, Oscar. Users can progress through lessons on how each piece moves, spot tactical patterns, and build strategies. The app tracks performance and adjusts the difficulty level based on past results.
This is Duolingo’s first new subject since introducing math and music classes in 2022 and 2023. The company has a vast user base of over 37 million daily active users and is using advancements in AI to speed up development, having launched the chess course in just eight months.
