Dwayne Johnson has starred in blockbuster films for years, but his new role in A24’s “The Smashing Machine” marks a shift towards prestige cinema. The film is based on the true story of Mark Kerr, a two-time UFC Heavyweight Tournament Champion who struggled with addiction to painkillers.
Johnson plays Kerr and sports prosthetics and an accent to portray him accurately. Emily Blunt stars as his wife in this career-changing role for Johnson, who has also collaborated with frequent collaborator Benny Safdie on the project.
“The Smashing Machine” arrives October 3rd, marking a pivot from franchise films like “Moana” and “Fast & Furious.” Johnson has been expanding into dramatic roles, including a Martin Scorsese crime drama in development with Leonardo DiCaprio. In the film’s trailer, Johnson says winning is the best feeling, highlighting his character’s journey to the top of the UFC world.
