Dwayne Johnson recently revealed that a screening of Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” in Imax inspired him to ensure his new Christmas action movie, “Red One,” could play on the premium large format. Johnson sat in the same Imax theater where Nolan screens his movies and was blown away by the film.
Johnson stated, “I watch ‘Oppenheimer.’ It was amazing… I remember texting [director Jake Kasdan] a picture of my bare chest and a picture of the screen and we realized how cool [Imax] would be.” The actor believes that if “Red One” utilized Imax technology, it could be a game-changer.
However, unlike “Oppenheimer,” which earned nearly $1 billion at the worldwide box office, “Red One” has underperformed. The movie cost $250 million to make and earned only $26 million internationally in its launch. Johnson’s film opens in US theaters on November 15 and is expected to have a soft opening in the $20 million range.
Critics have panned the movie, with Variety’s Owen Gleiberman writing, “I’m not sure that a Hollywood movie has ever kicked off the season with less true Christmas spirit… Directed with charmless energy by Jake Kasdan.”
