E-Bikes on Santa Clarita Streets Cause Safety Concerns

A growing number of e-bikes and e-motorcycles on Santa Clarita streets and trails has created a “resource problem” for city officials, with young riders taking to the roads and sidewalks without caution. According to Sgt. Mark Perkins of the SCV Sheriff’s Station, reports of up to 100 juvenile riders on bikes have been made, raising concerns about safety.

The proliferation of e-bikes and e-motorcycles has led to street takeovers, where groups of young riders gather in large numbers. While some ride on designated bike paths, others speed through crowded areas, posing a danger to pedestrians and other road users. Perkins noted that e-motorcycles are particularly hazardous due to their increased speed and potential for modification.

Residents have expressed frustration with the situation, citing close calls with e-bikes and e-motorcycles while walking or cycling on trails. Keith Loberit, a resident who spoke at a recent City Council meeting, said “It’s a citywide problem” and that parents should take responsibility for their children’s actions.

City officials have been working to raise awareness about the issue through outreach campaigns with the SCV Sheriff’s Station. Perkins stated that the station has learned about online meetups where riders organize group rides, which can lead to safety incidents. The sheriff’s office is also exploring the possibility of speed limit signs on trails to address concerns.

Local advocacy groups, such as the Santa Clarita Valley Bicycle Coalition, support the use of e-bikes but emphasize the need for education and awareness about their risks and regulations. Nina Moskol, leader of the coalition, highlighted the importance of understanding the different categories of e-bike motors and the potential dangers of modifying them.

The incident of a 17-year-old cyclist killed on McBean Parkway in October 2023 serves as a reminder of the risks involved with e-bikes. Moskol advocates for partnership between advocacy groups, schools, and local authorities to promote bike safety and education.
