Electronic Arts (EA) has canceled its highly anticipated Black Panther game and closed down developer Cliffhanger Games. The decision was announced in an internal email by EA Entertainment president Laura Miele, who cited the need to “sharpen our focus” on more significant growth opportunities.
Miele acknowledged that the layoffs would have a significant impact on the staff at Cliffhanger Games, saying they would receive support and potential new job opportunities within EA. The company will instead shift resources to established franchises like Battlefield, The Sims, Skate, and Apex Legends.
The cancellation comes after EA previously laid off around 300 employees across Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts’ Fan Care teams in April 2025. Other projects, including an Iron Man game developed by Motive and the third installment of Star Wars Jedi, remain in development.
Black Panther was announced in 2023 as part of a three-game deal between Marvel Games and EA, with Cliffhanger Games leading the charge. The studio, founded in 2023, had a team of experienced developers who worked on notable titles like Halo, God of War, and Call of Duty.
