Electronic Arts has canceled its highly anticipated Black Panther game and shut down Cliffhanger Games, a newly formed studio with former Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor developers. The move comes as part of the company’s efforts to “sharpen our focus” and allocate creative energy to high-growth opportunities.
In an email sent to staff, EA Entertainment president Laura Miele explained that these changes are intended to support the company’s strategic direction. Miele assured employees that they would be placed in new roles within the company, citing a successful placement program implemented in past rounds of layoffs.
EA is focusing on core franchises such as Battlefield, The Sims, Skate, and Apex Legends, while investing in Iron Man and Star Wars: Jedi games. The company also maintains its mobile business despite today’s cuts. Notably, EA’s agreement with Marvel remains strong, with a multi-title, long-term collaboration continuing.
These layoffs mark the latest round of restructuring efforts at EA, which have seen the company cut over 1,200 jobs in recent years. The company has faced criticism for increasing headcount on some teams while cutting others, leading to concerns about employee roles and stability.
As part of its restructuring, EA has also introduced a mandatory return-to-office policy, which has left some employees worried about their long-term prospects. When asked for comment on the layoffs or expected cuts, EA referred back to Miele’s email.
