Electronic Arts (EA) has laid off between 300-400 developers, with around 100 coming from Respawn Entertainment. The cuts are part of EA’s efforts to realign teams and allocate resources for future growth.
The affected project, codenamed R7, was an extraction shooter set in the Titanfall universe, but its fate remains unclear. Respawn has canceled another early-stage incubation project, leaving only two remaining.
In a statement, EA spokesperson Justin Higgs said the company is “sharpening its focus for the future” and making targeted team adjustments across Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi. The studio will continue to invest in the former’s competitive play and explore new ideas, while focusing on storytelling and gameplay for the latter.
Respawn Entertainment has been a key success for EA, thanks to the booming success of Apex Legends and the Star Wars Jedi series in 2019. However, if EA continues to cancel new projects, it may impact Respawn’s status as the crown jewel studio for the entertainment side of the business.
