EA Unveils First Glimpse of New Battlefield Game in Pre-Alpha Playtesting

Electronic Arts (EA) has provided the first official look at its upcoming Battlefield game as part of a video revealing what it calls “Battlefield Labs” and an invitation to playtesters. The brief gameplay snippet showcases pre-alpha development, which will help inform player feedback on priorities, improvements, and refinements before the game’s release.

Four EA studios are working on the new Battlefield: DICE in Sweden (multiplayer), Motive (single-player missions and multiplayer maps), Ripple Effect (attracting new players to the franchise), and Criterion (single-player campaign). The development process is entering a critical phase, with player input expected to significantly impact game development.

Battlefield Labs will test core gameplay elements like combat, destruction, balance, and feedback for weapons, vehicles, and gadgets. Initial invites are limited to a few thousand participants in Europe and North America, with servers expanding over time to include more territories.

The new Battlefield is set to return to a modern setting after stints in World War I, World War II, and the near future, featuring natural disasters like wildfires and ship-to-ship combat. EA has emphasized its commitment to reviving the series’ core identity while still offering new experiences within the franchise.

EA CEO Andrew Wilson has stated that Battlefield 2024 is “one of the most ambitious projects in [EA’s] history,” with significant investment expected. The company aims to earn back the trust of long-time fans and expand its player base.

A release date, launch platforms, or final title have yet to be announced for the new Battlefield game.
