Eagles Coach Defends Tush Push Amid Banning Proposal

Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni is pushing back on growing narratives surrounding the team’s tush push, which has been under scrutiny in recent weeks. While some have called for the play to be banned due to its high success rate and perceived ease of practice, Sirianni described the idea as “a little insulting.” The Eagles have used the play nearly twice as much as any other team since 2022, scoring a touchdown or achieving a first down on over 87% of attempts.

Sirianni acknowledged that his team has worked hard to master the play, and he believes the competition committee will take a thorough look at its use. The proposal to ban the tush push is set to be voted on by NFL owners next month, with 24 votes required for passage. Several coaches, including Green Bay’s Brian Gutekunst and Buffalo’s Sean McDermott, have expressed support for the proposal.

However, Sirianni disputed claims that the play poses an injury risk, citing a lack of significant injuries in recent years. The Eagles have run over 108 tush pushes since 2022, compared to just 55 by the Bills and 16 by the Bears. With the competition committee examining the play’s effectiveness, it remains to be seen how the NFL will proceed with the proposal.
