The Philadelphia Eagles’ backups played an unimpressive preseason game against the Cleveland Browns on Saturday. Despite a few bright spots, the team struggled in various aspects of the game.
Safety Andrew Mukuba took over the game, making two key plays – a 75-yard interception return for a touchdown and recovering a fumble at the right time. These performances put him back in the lead for the starting safety job opposite Reed Blankenship.
Quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson (DTR) had a disappointing performance, going 5/8 for 17 yards with an interception. The Eagles have decided to keep DTR over rookie Kyle McCord, citing McCord’s inconsistencies. The O-line backups also looked shaky, with Matt Pryor and Brett Toth struggling.
The Eagles’ defense showed signs of life, with Jihaad Campbell making a sack on a blitz through the A gap and getting multiple pressures on Browns QB Dillon Gabriel. Cornerback Ojulari had an impressive game, getting multiple pressures on Gabriel and even sacking him once.
Campbell’s performance has made his roster spot secure, while the corners vying for the starting CB2 job showed promise but didn’t do enough to seal their spots. Steen and Shipley appear set in their roles as starters.
