The Philadelphia Eagles have released veteran cornerback Darius Slay, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. The move comes after five seasons with the team, during which Slay played a key role in their two Super Bowl appearances and compiled nine interceptions. Designating Slay as a post-June 1 cut will save the Eagles $4.3 million on their salary cap for 2025.
Slay, a six-time Pro Bowler, had hoped to remain with the Eagles on a reworked deal or return to his hometown of Detroit, where he spent his first seven seasons. However, with rookies Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean shining, Slay became expendable. The team’s decision to release him makes room for the upcoming free agency period, which will see several high-profile defenders, including Milton Williams and Josh Sweat, hit the market.
Slay had stated earlier this month that he planned to play one more season before retiring. Despite his preference to stay in Philadelphia or return to Detroit, it appears that this chapter of his career has come to an end.
