Eagles Will Attend White House After Initial Rumors of Snub

The Philadelphia Eagles will attend the White House to celebrate their Super Bowl LIX victory, despite initial rumors that they would not participate. President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he will extend an invitation to the team.

In 2018, the Eagles did not visit the White House after winning the Super Bowl, but a club source told OutKick on Monday that the team intended to go this year. Trump confirmed the invite during a press conference, stating that the Eagles “deserve to be down here” and expressing hope to see them at the event.

The move comes after Trump predicted that the Kansas City Chiefs would win the Super Bowl for the third time in 2018, but the Eagles instead earned a dominant 40-22 victory. The decision to attend the White House will be a “team decision,” according to veteran offensive lineman Lane Johnson, who was part of the Super Bowl LII team that had its invitation rescinded by Trump due to controversy surrounding player protests during the national anthem.

This marks the Eagles’ first trip to the White House under Trump’s presidency. Other championship teams from the NFL and NBA have not visited during his administration, including the Los Angeles Lakers and Toronto Raptors. However, some teams, such as the Milwaukee Bucks and UConn men’s and women’s basketball teams, have made trips to visit with President Joe Biden in recent years.
