Early Cancer Detection via Blood Test Shows Promise

Researchers in the US have made a breakthrough in early cancer detection using blood tests. Studies show that analyzing tiny fragments of genetic material, or DNA signatures, shed by tumors can reveal tumors more than three years before diagnosis.

According to Yuxuan Wang, an oncology researcher at Johns Hopkins University, detecting cancer early gives patients time for intervention, increasing the chances of recovery. The team analyzed blood samples from participants with cancer and compared them to healthy individuals. In nearly 31% of cases, the multi-cancer early detection test flagged cancer.

While progress has been made, more sensitive tests are needed to detect cancer up to three years in advance. However, researchers remain optimistic about the potential for early diagnosis and improved survival rates. The study’s findings have added to our understanding of how cancer develops and can be identified at earlier stages, paving the way for new treatments.
