Early Signs of Dementia May Be Hidden in Your Eyes

Dementia is becoming a major public health concern in India due to its growing elderly population. A recent study by scientists from Loughborough University suggests that eyes may offer an early glimpse into the onset of dementia, up to 12 years before symptoms appear.

The study, which observed over 8,600 healthy individuals, found that those who would later develop dementia consistently responded more slowly than others in a visual sensitivity task. Researchers believe that toxic amyloid plaques first target regions associated with visual processing, leading to subtle neurological changes in the eyes before affecting memory centers.

According to experts, dementia disproportionately affects women and rural populations, with prevalence rates of 9.6% and 8.4%, respectively. The economic impact of dementia care in India is significant, with estimated costs projected to reach $36 billion by 2036.

To address this challenge, Dr Tamorish Kole recommends integrating early screening into primary healthcare services, strengthening mental health infrastructure, and launching large-scale public awareness campaigns. He also emphasizes the importance of education, mental stimulation, and healthy lifestyle choices in dementia prevention.

Despite growing numbers, dementia remains underdiagnosed and poorly understood. With timely intervention and a proactive strategy, India can mitigate the long-term impact of dementia and support millions of families facing this silent epidemic.
