Top weather experts at the United Nations and the UK have issued a warning that Earth is expected to experience extreme heat in the next five years, with a high likelihood of record-breaking temperatures. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) report states there’s an 80% chance of at least one year exceeding the previous record temperature.
The 2024-2029 period will see temperatures rise by between 1.2 and 1.9 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, fueling more extreme weather events. This increase in global warming is predicted to lead to more deaths from heatwaves, severe health impacts, and intense wildfires.
The report also warns of accelerated ice melt in the Arctic and northwest Pacific Ocean, with Arctic warming exceeding three-and-a-half times the global average. This trend is expected to worsen over the next five years, posing significant threats to ecosystems, economies, and daily life.
