Earth Spins Faster This Summer for Leap Seconds Adjustment

The International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service has announced two upcoming adjustments to Earth’s rotation. On July 22, the planet will spin about 1.38 milliseconds faster than its typical daily rotation of 86,400 seconds. This is followed by another adjustment on August 5, when Earth will rotate an additional 1.51 milliseconds. These leaps in time are necessary to keep our clocks synchronized with astronomical time and ensure that we remain accurate in measuring time.
