Earthquake Strikes Tonga After Major Quake in Myanmar

A 7.0 magnitude earthquake has struck Tonga, a Pacific island nation, about 60 miles northeast of its main island and capital city Nuku’alofa. The quake occurred early Monday morning and triggered a tsunami warning, with people advised to evacuate to higher ground or seek shelter inside steel or concrete buildings. No damages or injuries have been reported so far.

The earthquake follows another massive one in Myanmar, which had a magnitude of 7.7 and left thousands dead and injured. Neighboring Thailand has also been affected, with at least dozens killed and injured in the capital Bangkok.

As of Sunday, more than 200 remain missing in parts of Myanmar and Thailand. Officials are continuing to search for additional remains in hard-hit areas. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center had issued an alert but said the tsunami threat had passed.
