Two school districts in East Tennessee, Scott County Schools and Hamblen County Schools, have been affected by a global data breach linked to PowerSchool software provider. The breach, which occurred on December 28, exposed sensitive information including student and employee names, contact details, dates of birth, medical alert information, social security numbers, and more.
According to Bill Hall, Scott County’s director of schools, the district is taking steps to protect data in the future but holds PowerSchool responsible for the breach. “We are devoting much time and effort researching the causes of the security breach,” Hall said. “They are also in communication with the state department of education and other parties affected by and responding to issues and concerns caused by the breach.”
PowerSchool, which provides student information systems (SIS) for several school districts nationwide and internationally, is offering two years of credit monitoring from Experian to individuals affected by the breach. However, details on how they plan to implement this service are not yet available.
