A rebel alliance in eastern Congo, including the M23, has declared a ceasefire starting on February 4. The group, known as the Congo River Alliance, cited humanitarian reasons for the truce. However, it remains unclear whether the alliance will respect its promise not to capture Bukavu, the provincial capital of South Kivu, which was recently seized by the rebels. The declaration comes after Goma, the largest eastern city in Congo, fell to the rebel forces last week.
