A large study of nearly 16,000 adults has found no link between eating animal protein and a higher risk of death. In fact, the research suggests that consuming more animal protein may lower cancer mortality rates. The study, published in Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism, analyzed data from adults aged 19 and older using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III). Researchers found no increased risk of death associated with higher intake of animal protein, but did note a modest reduction in cancer-related mortality among those who ate more animal protein. The findings support the inclusion of animal proteins as part of a healthy dietary pattern, and may offer protective benefits against cancer-related mortality when combined with plant-based foods.
